INSTRUCTIONS AND RULES FOR USE OF THE TRACTION BATTERY FOR INDUSTRIAL USE

RULES FOR USE, CONTROL AND MAINTENANCE

USE:
it is good practice to use the battery avoiding deep discharges beyond the 80% of the nominal capacity expressed on the plate applied to the battery.

The discharge limit corresponds to the following densities of the electrolyte, referred to 30°C:

1,140 Kg/L for PzS Series batteries

1,160 Kg/L for PzSH Series batteries

Deep discharges beyond the nominal capacity 80% jeopardize the good functioning and lifespan of the industrial battery.

LOAD:
at the end of each work shift, and in any case when the electrolyte has the above-mentioned densities or lower, charge the battery by connecting it to the relevant current rectifier, taking care to carry out the following operations first:

·       Open the battery compartment cover;

·       If the battery is assembled with standard closing caps, lift the upper part so that the hydrogen produced during the charging cycle is eliminated. If the battery is assembled with a centralized topping up system, do not carry out the operation in point 2;

·       Insert the thermometer into a central element and check that the temperature of the electrolyte, before starting charging, is less than 30°C.

Check that during charging the temperature does not exceed 45°C and that at the end of the process the electrolyte has reached a density at 30°C of:

1,270 +/- 0,005 Kg/L for PzS series

1,290 +/- 0,005 Kg/L FOR PzSH SERIES

·       Once the charging phase has been completed, in the case of batteries without the application of centralized top-up, check that the electrolyte level is 15 / 20 mm above the flags and is visible on the bottom of the body inside the caps;

·       Top up with distilled water when necessary, avoiding excessive and uneven additions; in the case of batteries equipped with the centralized top-up system, just observe the level indicators and, if necessary, connect the batteries to the water container until the flow indicator indicates the end of the operation.

CLEANING
at the end of the charging operation, carefully dry and clean the cell covers and all the external parts of the battery.

It is very important to keep every part of the battery clean and dry, periodically greasing the terminals, to prevent harmful corrosion which can compromise the functioning and life of the battery itself.

LITTLE USED BATTERIES:
unused batteries must be kept in a covered, cool, dry, non-dusty and frost-free environment. Carry out checks and top-ups periodically, at least monthly.

It is recommended to never leave discharged batteries with lower density electrolyte for more than 2 days
1,180 / 1,200 Kg/L to carry out complete refills before periods of prolonged inactivity.

ELECTROLYTE:
the electrolyte is a corrosive solution of sulfuric acid that can cause severe burns.

In case of contact with eyes, wash immediately and abundantly with water and consult a doctor.

It is recommended to:

·       Top up to the prescribed level, avoiding exceeding; always and only exclusively after charging.

·       Always use eye protection when working on batteries;

·       If there is danger of contact with the electrolyte, wear protective clothing, such as gloves and aprons.

ELECTRICAL HAZARDS:
if a metal tool or other conductive object shorts the terminals of one or more elements, it heats up and can cause burns.

Furthermore, there may be sparks or projections of molten metal.

The following precautions are recommended:

  • Before working on the batteries, remove all metal objects that are in your hands, wrists, neck or that may fall from your pockets;
  • Always use insulated tools;
  • Do not place tools or other conductors on top of the elements;
  • Take all precautions relevant to the voltage of the system against any risk of electric shock.

GAS DEVELOPMENT AND CHARGING RECOMMENDATIONS:
Batteries being charged, in service and in motion emit hydrogen and oxygen gases and droplets of corrosive electrolyte. The mixture of hydrogen and air produces explosions if it is ignited.

It must be assumed that this explosive mixture is always present in the vicinity of the battery.

We therefore recommend the following:

  • Make sure the rectifier is compatible with the voltage and capacity of the battery;
  • Carry out charging in a well-ventilated area exclusively designated for this purpose;
  • Open the battery compartment cover and the loading area;
  • Do not smoke and do not use open flames near the battery and in the loading area;
  • Avoid short circuits and the use of any source of sparks near the batteries;
  • Place first aid and fire fighting equipment in an easily accessible place.

INSTALLATION
it is recommended to be careful so that there are no electrolyte leaks or damage to the elements:

  • Lift the battery using specific and suitable equipment;
  • Check that the weight indicated on the battery plate is within the weight limit specified on the vehicle plate;
  • Make sure the battery is installed in the correct position and that the locking devices are securely fastened.

EXHAUSTED BATTERIES:
keep in mind that out-of-use lead batteries are classified as "toxic waste" and that by law (DL N°397 of 9.9.88 and Law N° 475 of 8.11.88) their delivery to the appropriate Consortium for their disposal is mandatory. disposal through recycling.
